If your Volkswagen vehicle relies on a disc brake system, there are several components that work together to slow -- and eventually stop -- the rotation of your wheels. Among the most important of those parts? Your brake pads.

How Brake Pads Work

You start things by pressing the sole of your foot against the brake pedal. That causes the master brake cylinder to send hydraulic brake fluid through lines and hoses to brake calipers as each wheel. The fluid's building pressure causes the calipers to clamp the brake pads onto the brake rotors, producing the friction needed to stop. The brake pads serve two roles. First, they cushion the contact between calipers and rotors, preventing damage and warping. Second, they help to disperse the heat generated by the act of braking. That helps to keep the calipers from corroding.

How to Spot Brake Pad Problems

Eventually, though, even the highest quality brake pads can go bad. Since that puts your safety at risk, you'll want to fix things as soon as you can. Signs of trouble include:

  • You hear a squealing or squeaking noise coming from the brakes
  • Your vehicle needs more time and distance to stop
  • You hear a distinct grinding sound when you brake
  • Your brake pedal feels soft or squishy under your foot
